Recommended software and useful tools

Undelete
Here's a copy of an old Microsoft program that came with DOS 5.0. It was the predecessor of Win95's Recycle Bin. If you've accidentally 'Recycled' anything recently, this program might still be able to get it back for you. UNDELETE.EXE

MI/X
MI/X used to be a decent free PC X server. Things not to like: No clipboard exporting (to or from other Win apps). No active redraw. No xhost security stuff. Doesn't like you trying to extend it by doing things like adding fonts. Not robust. Only X11R5 compliant (which is now inexcusable). And more importantly, no longer free.

It used to be the only free X server for Windows. Now there is XFree86 for CygWin, both of which I highly recommend. See the Cygwin homepage.

I no longer bother to mirror MI/X, since there is now a cheaper and better option, not to mention a more trusted source (XFree86 is the X server that ships with Linux).

Rops
Rops was a non-crippled shareware PostScript viewer. The new version out there is crippleware, but here is an older, uncrippled, but perhaps not as robust version.

Cedomir Igaly's SSH
No longer the only free SSH client for Windows, but still the simplest to install. It has been out of development for about 2 years now and I now recommend OpenSSH unless you can do without SSH2 and need a quickly installable and fairly portable program. I used to cart Cigaly SSH and MI/X around on a Zip disk to use in labs, libraries, etc.

You need the cigaly ssh distribution as well as this encryption DLL. That one requires ODBC; if you cant use it or it has problems, theres another DLL in an older distribution.

Cedomir Igaly stopped making this program available in Feb 2000. I think I may be the only mirror remaining. (Cedomir doesn't mind.)

RecAll
Of all the high-powered audio software out there, few of them do what this little one does: VOX-activated WAV recording. It monitors your desired source, you set the trigger sound level, and it will record only those snips in the input which break the level mark. Settable wait-pause and it even timestamps each snippet. Great for unattended scanner monitoring (what I use it for) or for memo-taking, etc.
